Billionaire investor Mark Cuban has stepped in to defend Welch through the aftermath. “It wasn’t something she fully understood,” he said during a podcast with The Washington Post‘s Jules Terpak gambling documentaries. “But she trusted the people around her.”

The investors are now suing the company Tuah The Moon Foundation, which was used to take in the money received from the sale of the memecoin. The investors are also suing the company’s chief financial backers, listed as Hong Kong-based Overhere Ltd., its chief executive, Clinton So, and a Los Angeles-based online promoter, Alex Larson Schultz.

Cayman Island-based sellers and promoters reportedly misused Welch’s newfound fame to promote the HAWK token as a registered security. The lawsuit alleged that the Hawk Tuah team failed to register the meme coin per securities laws. It was estimated that the team pocketed £2.46 million ($3.3 million) from the botched launch and netted an additional £1.49 million ($2 million) in fees from transactions conducted via the Meteora exchange.

Cryptocurrency works through networks of nodes that are constantly communicating with each other to stay updated about the current state of the ledger. With permissionless cryptocurrencies, a node can be operated by anyone, provided they have the necessary technical knowledge, computer hardware and bandwidth.

The circulating supply of a cryptocurrency is the amount of units that is currently available for use. Let’s use Bitcoin as an example. There is a rule in the Bitcoin code which says that only 21 million Bitcoins can ever be created. The circulating supply of Bitcoin started off at 0 but immediately started growing as new blocks were mined and new BTC coins were being created to reward the miners. Currently, there are around 19.87 million Bitcoins in existence, and this number will keep growing until the 21 millionth BTC is mined. Since 19.87 million BTC have been mined so far, we say that this is the circulating supply of Bitcoin.

Cryptocurrency mining is the process of adding new blocks to a blockchain and earning cryptocurrency rewards in return. Cryptocurrency miners use computer hardware to solve complex mathematical problems. These problems are very resource-intensive, resulting in heavy electricity consumption.

However, not all cryptocurrencies work in the same way. While all cryptocurrencies leverage cryptographic methods to some extent (hence the name), we can now find a number of different cryptocurrency designs that all have their own strengths and weaknesses.

The miner that provides the correct solution to the problem first gets to add the new block of transactions to the blockchain and receives a reward in return for their work. Bitcoin miners are rewarded with BTC, Ethereum miners are rewarded with ETH, and so forth.

Cryptocurrencies are digital or virtual currencies that use cryptographic methods to secure transactions and control the creation of new units. Unlike traditional fiat currencies, which are issued and regulated by central authorities such as governments or central banks, cryptocurrencies operate on decentralized networks. These networks often employ blockchain technology, a public ledger system that records all transactions transparently and immutably.
